SCULPTURE

Jo started building animals out of wire because of a specific commission. The ability to explore from the inside out a beasts' form suited her use of line. It appeared as the link that was missing earlier in her work between space and paper.
The way she thinks out loud the exploration of movement, balance and poise with lengths of wire, can be seen in the twists and curves internally of each animal.

Hocks, ears and ribs are represented by a series of shapes that are sculpted through the external outline. The emphasis of repeated strands of wire give a feeling of flow and motion that is snapped to a halt for a brief blink of the eyes. Whilst being life size for the majority, and on first viewing figuratively accurate, they are loose enough in their drawing to capture the essence of the animal and portray a presence, just as if you'd stumbled upon them in the woods.
